Cleaning a natural wood deck
A natural wood deck can be a beautiful addition to any outdoor space. However, over time, exposure to the elements can cause dirt, grime, and mildew to accumulate on the surface, which can make it look old and worn. Regular cleaning is essential to maintain the beauty and longevity of your deck. Here are some steps to follow to clean your natural wood deck:
Step 1: Clear the Deck
Before you start cleaning, remove all furniture, pots, and other items from the deck. This will give you a clear workspace and prevent any damage to your belongings during the cleaning process.
Step 2: Sweep the Deck
Using a broom, sweep the surface of the deck thoroughly to remove any loose dirt and debris. This will make it easier to apply the cleaning solution evenly and prevent any scratches or damage to the wood.
Step 3: Mix the Cleaning Solution
There are several different types of cleaning solutions available for natural wood decks, including commercial products and DIY solutions. To make a DIY solution, mix equal parts of water and white vinegar, or combine a non-abrasive soap like Dawn into a bucket with water. Alternatively, you can use a commercial deck cleaner following the manufacturer's instructions.
Step 4: Apply the Cleaning Solution
Using a deck brush or a stiff-bristled broom, apply the cleaning solution to the deck surface. If using a foamy soap scrub you can let the mixture sit on the deck to loosen up the dirt, but don’t let the solution completely dry. Scrub the surface thoroughly to remove any dirt, grime, or mildew stains. Pay special attention to areas that receive high traffic, such as steps and railings. Scrub in the direction of the grain versus against to not pull up splinters!
Step 5: Rinse the Deck
After scrubbing, rinse the deck thoroughly with a garden hose or pressure washer. Make sure to remove all the cleaning solution and debris from the surface. If you're using a pressure washer, be careful not to damage the wood by using too high a pressure or holding the nozzle too close to the surface. A normal hose will work just fine.
Step 6: Let the Deck Dry
Allow the deck to dry completely before replacing any furniture or items on the surface. Depending on the weather conditions, this could take anywhere from a few hours to a full day.
(Optional) Step 7: Apply a Protective Finish
To protect your natural wood deck from future damage, apply a protective finish, such as a sealer or stain. This will help prevent moisture from penetrating the wood and keep it looking beautiful for years to come.
