How we started

By women, for women.

For many years, the stereotype of the male head of household being the primary decision-maker when it comes to home buying and maintenance has prevailed. However, recent trends are showing a significant shift in this narrative. According to a report by the National Association of Realtors, women are now buying more homes than men.

Women are buying more homes than men

Over the past few years, women have been breaking down barriers in many traditionally male-dominated fields, including homeownership. According to the National Association of Realtors, single women made up 18% of homebuyers in 2019, while single men made up only 9%. Additionally, in married-couple households, women were the primary decision-makers for homebuying in 32% of cases, compared to men at 17%.

This trend can be attributed to a variety of factors, including a rise in the number of single women and women-led households, as well as an increase in women’s earning power and financial independence. Women are also more likely to prioritize homeownership and view it as a good investment for their future.

Women complete more home maintenance

In addition to buying more homes, studies have shown that women are also completing more home maintenance tasks than men. A study by HomeServe USA found that women were more likely than men to take care of home repairs and maintenance, including plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems.

The trends of women buying more homes than men and completing more home maintenance tasks are significant shifts in the traditional gender roles of homeownership and home maintenance. Women are taking on more responsibility when it comes to maintaining their homes, and this is an empowering trend that should be celebrated. As women continue to break down barriers and take on new roles and responsibilities, we can expect to see these trends continue to grow in the years to come.

We started HIA to empower women to tackle home maintenance through an easy to use platform, helpful reminders, and no-nonsense support.
