Changing your HVAC Filter
Fresh air, happier you
A HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system plays a crucial role in maintaining a comfortable and healthy indoor environment in your home or office. It regulates the temperature and humidity levels and filters out contaminants from the air. One essential component of your HVAC system that requires regular maintenance is the air filter. Here’s how to change your HVAC filter and pick the right filter for you.
Step 1: Turn off the HVAC system
Before attempting to change the air filter, turn off the HVAC system to prevent any accidents or damage to the system.
Step 2: Locate the filter
The air filter is typically located in the return air duct or in the air handler unit. If you are unsure of where your filter is located, refer to your HVAC system's owner’s manual or contact a professional HVAC technician for assistance.
Step 3: Remove the filter
Once you have located the filter, carefully remove it. Take note of the filter size for future reference when purchasing a replacement filter - the dimensions can be found printed on your filter.
Step 4: Choose the right filter
When selecting a new air filter, it's important to choose the right one for your HVAC system and your specific needs. Air filters are rated based on their Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) rating, which indicates their effectiveness in capturing airborne particles. The higher the MERV rating, the more efficient the filter is at capturing smaller particles. However, a higher MERV rating can also restrict airflow, which can reduce the system's efficiency and increase energy costs.
Consider your indoor air quality needs, the system's compatibility, and your budget when choosing a new filter. For example, if you have allergies or asthma, you may want to choose a higher MERV-rated filter to capture smaller particles.
P.S. If you have pets or frequent allergies during a specific season you may want to change the filter monthly no matter the MERV!
Step 5: Install the new filter
Once you have selected the right filter, carefully insert it into the system, making sure it fits securely and in the correct orientation.
Step 6: Turn on the HVAC system
After installing the new filter, turn on the HVAC system and ensure that it is functioning correctly by noting the air flow.
Change this filter quarterly to ensure that your HVAC system is operating efficiently and providing clean, healthy air for you and your family!
